Google Places Out, Google+Local In

Google announced the launch of Google+local this week — a move which effectively converted more than 80 million Google Places pages into Google+local pages. So, if you didn’t get around to creating a Google+ page yet, you can thank Google for getting you started.

Local information integrated across Google

Of course, there’s a reason for all this, not the least of which is to gain more traction for Google+.  Users can now click on the new “Local” tab on the bottom left-hand side of Google+ to search for specific places or browse for locations. If you click on a restaurant, or a place, you’ll be taken to a local Google+ page that includes photos, Zagat scores and summaries, reviews from people you know and trust, and other useful information like address and opening hours.

As part of the move, Google replaced its five-star review system with the Zagat 30-point rating scale. Google has also added depth to the reviews by adding ratings on service, atmosphere and the like. Individual scores will be rated on a zero to 3 point scale, averaged and then multiplied by 10 to create an average score where 26-30 is near perfection and 0-9 is poor to fair.

26-30Extraordinary to perfection
21-25Very good to excellent
16-20Good to very good
10-15Fair to good
0-9Poor to fair

What’s a business to do?

For now, according to the Google and Your Business Blog, businesses should continue to update their company  info via their Google Places page, but eventually this will be phased out. If you already had a Google+ business page, you might check to be sure you don’t have two.

“If you are a business owner, you should continue to manage your information in Google Places for Business,”said Jen Fitzpatrick, VP Engineering, in the Google and Your Business Blog. “You’ll still be able to verify your basic listing data, make updates, and respond to reviews. For those who use AdWords Express, your ads will operate as normal as they’ll automatically redirect people to the destination you selected, or your current listing,”

Implications for local search

There is good news for savvy marketers who have already mastered Google+ because now these pages will be indexed and available across across all Google properties including search, maps and mobile. If you haven’t yet started on Google+, now is a great time to start. But like it or not, your low maintenance Google Places page is now a full blown social media site that needs your attention. Its time to expand your social circles, encourage reviews and engage your followers with great content. Google+ is flexing its local muscle.

4 Content Strategies to Increase Sales Leads Online

Monthly salesContent encompasses all that conveys information from your web presence. To increase sales leads online break the big picture down to small but effective steps. In essence craft, share, and measure your content. Add live interaction to complement your content strategy.  Doing so will increase sales leads.

1. Craft highly focused content that addresses your prospects’ pain points and offer a solution. Do not overwhelm with too much information. Take a look at how Glidden Paint offers simple solutions and adds an interactive element on their website.

2. Share your content. The Word of Mouth Marketing Association estimates that two thirds of economic activity is influenced by personal referrals and recommendations.  An effective way to share content online is to add share buttons on each web page and each piece of self-contained content including blog posts, videos, newsletters and offer-type emails.

To get a sense of what kind of content people like to share visit the Allthingsnow site which shows the top Facebook Shares of the day as well as the most popular Facebook page sites.

Include a link to your content on twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn posts. Don’t forget Tumblr, Posterous and bookmarking sites such as Stumbleupon, Delicious and Reddit. The Google Reader share button is also useful. Adding a feed to your own sites’ most popular content is another way to share your information.

3. Study prospects online behavior. Who is on your site and what content are they engaging with? Follow up. Eloqua and Hubspot are two companies that offer marketing automation and web analytics solutions. Reach prospects by function and vertical using content aligned with their interest and business objective including white papers, case studies, and articles. Track which content is leading to conversions.

4. Give your prospects a choice for some kind of live experience. Even if it’s a telephone number to call. Viewers appreciate accessibility. Live chat software is being used successfully by Wells Fargo and Regence BlueCross/Blue Shield. Both reported higher customer satisfaction after adding a live chat option to their websites. Wells Fargo reported a double-digit increase in sales. Customers preferred using live chat over the telephone.

Each of these strategies can be used on websites and social media sites. Apply them regularly and your leads will increase.

List Six Traits You Like About Your Customers

Covent Garden MarketWhy do you and your customers choose each other? When you get the answer to that question, you can engage them with passion and purpose through your website content, blog, or newsletter.

A lot of content focuses on solutions and providing services directed to a customer’s “pain” points. What if you add customers’ passions? It is estimated that 10% of customers account for more than 50% of a company’s profits.

From Pain to Passion

Going from pain to passion requires uncovering what traits you like most about your customers and what your customers like most about you. I discovered in informal interviews with B2B companies that these were traits they liked best in their customers.

Reliable: Adheres to schedules, produces what’s needed, and pays on time.

Trustworthy: Is honest, loyal and forthright.

Grateful: Acknowledge they are well served and show appreciation.

Forgiving: Understand that no one is perfect all of the time.

Strategic: Able to think things through as partners to a favorable outcome.

Knowledgeable: Generous in sharing what they know.

Identify 6 Traits Your Customers Like About You

You can use the traits you like in customers to find what customers like about you. A simple survey will do. You may include Yes, No, Sometimes as answer selections. This example uses the above results to frame questions:

–      Do we adhere to schedules and produce what’s needed on time?

–      Can you depend on us to be honest and forthright?

–      Do you feel appreciated by XYZ Company?

–      If we admit a mistake, will your forgive us?

–      Did we find a satisfying solution to your problem?

–      Do we adequately share our expertise with you?

Understanding what you like and what your customer’s viewpoint and perceptions are makes you a better communicator. Your content can reflect that.
